Full-time study of economics in Košice started at the branch office in Košice on 01/09/1969. At the time there were two departments: Department of Automatic Management Systems and Department of National Economy. Later the Department of ASR was canceled and four new departments were set up. One of them was the Department of Business Science. It was later renamed the Department of Business Administration and on 01/02/1997 to the Department of Management .

Department of management

Until August 31,  2022, the head of the department was Prof. Dipl. Ing. Bohuslava Mihalčová, PhD., & PhD., EUR ING.

8 internal teachers (1 professor, 3 associate professors, 3 assistant professors (one of them on maternal leave), 2 PhD students worked at the Department of Management in the academic year 2021/2022. The Department provided teaching management disciplines at first, second and third degree of study in full-time and part-time study. Materials provided by the department not only provided students with the necessary theoretical knowledge, but equal emphasis was also on developing practical managerial knowledge, skills and competences.

Members of the department were actively involved in research projects of the University of Economics in Bratislava, as well as to projects financed by the Ministry of Education (VEGA, KEGA and APVV). To address these projects, the members of the department organized scientific seminars and workshops. From 2015, the Department organized the International Scientific Conference of MTS (Marketing Management, Trade, Financial and Social Aspects of Business) each year.

The members of the department published their scientific findings particularly in quality scientific journals and proceedings, registered in the database Scopus, Web of Science and Web of Knowledge, etc.

The department actively engaged in cooperation with national and foreign institutions, especially with the University of Tomáš Baťa in Zlín, Prague University of Economics and Business in Prague, Faculty of Economics in Bolona, Ningbo University in China, with the University of Parthenope in Naples, with the University of Finance and Administration in Prague, etc.

The members of the department were responsible for issuing the faculty scientific journal  Business Revue  and on-line professional journal Management in Theory and Practice.

 

Department of Economics

Until August 31,  2022, the head of the department was Prof. Dipl. Ing. Bohuslava Mihalčová, PhD., & PhD., EUR ING.

Department of Economics taught and provided scientific research activities oriented on economic theory, economic policy, finance and banking, financial markets and the doctrine of Business. Department addressed also the issues of the environment economics, renewable energy sources, and the sustainability of natural resources.

The department participated in solving both the VEGA and KEGA projects as well as some other projects announced by prestigious organizations. Department encouraged and supported young scientists within their scientific-research activity. The research results were presented at domestic and international scientific conferences, symposia and national and international scientific journals. The results of the department’s scientific work were implemented in the teaching of the whole curriculum. They also served such a source for modernization of literature.

The Department of Economy participated in the preparation of both the economists and managers for enterprises within the accredited study programs in the whole spectrum of degrees of study from bachelor to Philosophiae doctor. Modules that the department provided help to fill up the profile of graduates of individual study programs significantly. The aim of educational activity was to provide students with the theoretical aspects and empirical knowledge of individual economic science and to contribute significantly to the development of economic thinking.

Department of Applied Mathematics as a predecessor of the Department of Quantitative Methods was founded in 1993. In 1999, the department was renamed to the Department of Business Informatics and Mathematics. During this period the department ensured teaching subjects from the field of informatics, mathematics and statistics. Since 2002, the Department began to enlarge and cover other subjects and fields of interest. In 2013, the name of the department was changed to current one, the Department of Quantitative Methods. Since 2005 has the department active doctoral students who are involved in teaching. Since then, the number of PhD students in the department increased significantly. The department is also engaged in projects from different fields supported by national or European bodies, or demand driven projects from business practice. In its history, the department  also contributed to many major faculty conferences and events.

Department of Quantitative Methods focuses on the area of applying mathematical and statistical methods into the economic practice. Employees and students of the department are working on research in areas of Quality Improvement Methodology – Six Sigma, Real Option Theory, Sustainable Development, Graph Theory, Risk Management – Safety Improvement and in Performance Measurement of companies and educational systems.

Our staff provides consultation to other research institutes and commercial partners in the field of quality improvement, training and learning methodologies in quality improvement, research and market surveys and employee satisfaction.

Department of Accounting and Finance was established on 1st September 1990 at the branch of the Faculty of Management  of College of Economics in Košice. The need to build the Department of Accounting and Finance resulted from changed conditions in the economy, corporate governance in early nineties, particularly with regard to rebuilding the study and implementation of a new area of ​​study - the teaching of Business.

Teaching the accounting and finance had its history and the faculty before the occurrence of the department. These objects created profile graduates honors ASR, but also included these subjects in terms of specialization between marginal, not dominant and addtional.

Change of political conditions and economic system after 1989 took place. Therefore modules of the department took its rightful place in teaching students of first, second and third degree in Economics and Business Management, Commercial Business and Financial Management. Due to the specialization of the faculty for education in business economics lot of department, such as accounting, taxes of business entities, economic analysis, corporate finance, calculations, enterprise risk and financial management formed the pillars of knowledge that managers need to manage businesses.

Department of Accounting and Finance recorded its creation in 1990, the founders of the Department of Accounting and Finance, has been doc. Ing. Jozef Šalák, CSc., who was its first head. Its beginnings are associated with seven employees. The team of the Department of accounting and finance accounted for 17 internal lecturers, 5 internal PhD students and 7 external PhD students.

After the introduction of study programs in 2004, the department was a responsible for two programs: Economics and Management and Corporate Financial Management.

In 2008, the Department of Accounting and Finance was renamed the Department of Finance and Accounting, where 15 internal staff including one professor, one associate professor, 12 lecturers, including 10 with a PhD., 1 secretary, 1 external teacher, 2 internal and four PhD students worked. The department provided the teaching of compulsory and optional subjects at the first, second and third stages of university education study program Economics and Management, Commercial Business and Corporate Financial Management. The department provided a total of 21 modules at all levels of study as compulsory subjects, the most important being accounting, corporate finance, taxes of businesses, calculations and budgeting, financial economic analysis, financial management, financial analysis and financial planning, management business risk in educational activities. Optional courses focused primarily on the financial statements, auditing, enterprise valuation, financial management of SMEs, international tax systems, financial engineering, quantitative methods in financial management.

The modules of the department of finance and accounting formed the pillar of knowledge to business economics and finance executives.

The department educated a large number of diploma students since its creation at the faculty. In 1992 - 1994 it organized and guaranteed retraining courses with a focus on financial companies, accounting and tax business entities. Its members contribute in professional and scientific journals, presented at scientific conferences in the country and abroad. They collaborate with businesses, Prague University of Economics, Economics Academy in Kraków and Katowice, as well as with the State University in Uzhhorod Transcarpathian and financial institutions of Eastern Slovakia.

The Department is focused on issues of financial management, accounting and taxes in research activities,. Scientific research area based on the current requirements of economic theory and economic practice. Research activities focused on managing and organizing the financial processes of a business in such a binding interaction that positively influence the development and activity of the business sector.

The research activities are conducted in accordance with the profiling of the faculty with the requirements of improving the teaching process as well as the plan of qualification growth of teachers of the Department of Finance and Accounting.

The department was solving four projects VEGA and four institutional projects whose overall aim of solution was the examination, evaluation and management of cash flows in the company, diagnose the financial health of the company and prediction of financial distress with special methodological tools, effective evaluation of renewable energy, implementation of international accounting and application of standards IAS / IFRS and their impact on income tax. Improving publications department focused on publishing original scientific works mainly in peer-reviewed journals and scientific monographs.

After organizational changes to the UE FBE in Košice since December 2013, the Department of Finance and Accounting was renamed the Department of Corporate Financial Management. As the head of the department was appointed Ing. Jana Simonidesová, PhD. The department provides courses currently teaching at primary and secondary level study.

The Department of Corporate Financial Management was created by transformation of the Department of Finance and Accounting. It provides teaching of modules on the first, the second and the third degree of university studies in the study programs Business Economics and Management, Commercial Entrepreneurship, Corporate Financial Management and Corporate Business and Marketing. The modules of the department form an important pillar of knowledge for business economists and managers in the financial sector.

The Department provides a total of 18 subjects as compulsory subjects and optional courses for full-time and part-time study in educational activities.

Its members publish in professional and scientific journals, periodicals registered in the database Web of Science and Scopus and peer-reviewed journals, presented at scientific conferences in the country and abroad.

The department focuses on issues of financial management, accounting and taxes in research activities. Scientific research area is based on the actual requirements of economic theory and economic practice that enhances the development and activity of the business sector. The department members are currently engaged in VEGA projects, projects of young scientists and events organized in the framework of the Week of Science and Technology in Slovakia. Since depatment´s foundation in 2013, there is tradition of organizing international scientific conference called "Marketing management, financial and social aspects of the business", which paved a way for the exchange of knowledge on an international level together with the Department of Commercial Business.

The department consists of 9 internal employees including 4 associate professors, 5 assistent professors with PhD.

Department of Commercial Entrepreneurship established 01/12/2013 transformation of the Department of Marketing and Trade, which continued the tradition of Department of Marketing  (established in February 1997). The department is the carrier of the bachelor study program 3.3.9. Commerical Business, and provides teaching of subjects in all study programs of the faculty. The courses are focused on the area of ​​trade, services, tourism, marketing and logistics. Department members participate in selected lectures at home and abroad, they cooperate with the external environment and take part of regular events within the Week of Science and Technology. Since 2013 the department has helped to create a tradition of organizing international scientific conference called Marketing management, financial and social aspects of business where there is scope for exchange of knowledge on an international level. Members of the department have been involved and engaged in projects in various fields of national and European support.

The history of the Department of Economics and Management began with the establishment of the Detached Educational Workplace of the Higher School of Economics in Bratislava (currently the University of Economics in Bratislava) in Košice. On 1 September 1969, full-time students began their studies at this workplace in Košice. At that time there were two departments within the workplace:

  • Department of National Economy,
  • Department of Automatic Management System (AMS).

The AMS Department was later abolished, and four new departments were established, including the Department of Business Science. It was later renamed the Department of Business Administration and in 1997 the Department of Management, already within the Faculty of Business Economics with seat in Košice of the University of Economics in Bratislava. In the same year, the Department of National Economy changed its name to the Department of Economics. In September 2022, the Department of Economics and the Department of Management were merged, and the current Department of Economics and Management of the Faculty of Business Economics with seat in Košice of the University of Economics in Bratislava was created.

The Department of Economics and Management was established on 1 September 2022 through the merger of the Department of Economics and the Department of Management. The head of the department is Prof. Dipl. Ing. Bohuslava Mihalčová, PhD. & PhD., EUR ING. 12 internal teachers, including two professors, five associate professors, five assistant professors (one of them on maternity leave) and five PhD students work at the Department in the academic year 2022/2023.

The Department of Economics and Management provides teaching at the first, second and third degree in full-time and part-time study. The pedagogical activities focus primarily on economic theories, finance, business administration and the teaching of a wide range of management disciplines. The courses offered by the department provide students with the necessary theoretical knowledge, while focusing also on the development of practical management and communication skills and teamwork. 

The members of the department are actively involved in scientific research projects funded by the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic (VEGA, KEGA and APVV) and projects of the University of Economics in Bratislava. Within the framework of these projects, the members of the department organise scientific conferences, seminars and workshops. The department plans to continue the tradition of organising the International Scientific Conference of MTS (MARKETING MANAGEMENT, TRADE, FINANCIAL AND SOCIAL ASPECTS OF BUSINESS), which has been organised annually since 2015 by the Department of Management in cooperation with other departments of the Faculty.

The members of the department present their scientific results at domestic and foreign scientific conferences. In their publication activities, they mainly focus on publishing results in high-quality scientific journals and proceedings registered in the Web of Science, SCOPUS, or other databases. The members of the department are responsible for issuing the scientific journal Business Revue and the online journal Management in Theory and Practise. 

The department actively cooperates with domestic and foreign institutions, in particular with Tomáš Baťa University in Zlín, Prague University Economics and Business, the Faculty of Economics in Bologna, Ningbo University in China and Parthenope University in Naples.
